Abstract
In the early 1900s, many people from different ethnic and religious communities in the Ottoman Empire migrated to France. The names, addresses, and at times ethonoreligious backgrounds of the Ottoman residents in France were documented into registrations during World War I. These required registrations were taken over the course of several years and submitted to the French police. At the time, Ottomans were considered to be suspicious, as they fought on the opposing side of France during World War I. Using these registrations from the archives of the French Foreign Ministry in La Courneuve, I have managed and sorted through the archival data, cataloging the information into a database I have created. Currently, there has not been extensive research done about the Ottoman diasporas in France, and the number of such migrants is unknown. So, with this data, we hope to evaluate the size of this migrant population in France at the outbreak of World War I. We are also trying to understand where exactly these migrants were located in France. With the data I have digitized, I will use the geographic software ArcGIS to map out the residences of the Ottoman migrants in France. I will be able to add specialized functions to the map, for example grouping people by ethnic backgrounds. This will help us contextualize the lives of the Ottoman subjects and analyze patterns between areas of residence and ethnoreligious backgrounds
