Abstract
The Michigan sport tourism strategy project looks to create the first sports tourism strategy the state of Michigan has ever seen. While the tourism industry of Michigan has created and paid much attention to their tourism strategy, the lack of a sport tourism strategy is telling: there is no plan developed by the state of Michigan on how it should best capitalize off of the growing sport tourism industry. Because of this, Michigan is leaving economic development and benefits on the table. The research my team and I are conducting will produce the first Michigan sports tourism strategy. With the help of academics and the field, as well as collaboration from Michigan’s 16 sport commissions, a developed sports tourism strategy will be created by the completion of this project. The hope is that after the completion of this project, there will be more focus on the improvement of the strategy and understanding of sports tourism in the state of Michigan.
