Abstract
While there are numerous groundbreaking discoveries shared with the world each day, the quality of the work happening in research is falling short of the expectations put forth by the academic community. By this, I mean much of the research conducted and published is lacking reproducibility and reliability– both of which are indispensable to the practice known as open science. Open science encompasses unhindered access to data and scientific articles, which enhances the quality and efficiency of research occurring. This improved access to research through sharing materials openly not only builds accountability and transparency in academia, but also allows for collaboration that amplifies innovation and reduces the duplication of research. Altogether, open science enables the public to benefit from current scientific findings by mending the research and publication gaps that obstruct the nature of science. The aim of this project is to document our experience with practicing open science, both retroactively and proactively, in order to create a universal guide that will serve as a model for sharing research transparently as a means of promoting integrity and reproducibility. In our guide, we elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of various open science methods and their long term implications, so that researchers from all disciplines can put out information that is accurate and easily accessible to the general public. We hope that by instilling these open science practices we can promote a community in research that encourages accessibility, transparency, and reliability to fulfill the fundamental right to honest and equitable science.
