Abstract

Drone-mounted radiation detectors would be extremely useful for performing radiological surveys. Such a drone is being designed at the University of Michigan. This <25 kg drone would be subject to regulation and registration with the Federal Aviation Administration under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 107 because of its non-recreational use. A Remote Pilot Certificate is also required for its operators. To be eligible for a commercial drone pilot's license, individuals must be at least 16 y old, understand English, and pass an aeronautical knowledge test. Obtaining a commercial drone pilot's license requires an investment of time and effort and is an essential step for individuals looking to operate drones for any purpose beyond recreation. During the drone’s design process, tests are performed to ensure that the drone is structurally stable and performs its assigned tasks successfully. Ensuring the safety of anyone in the vicinity of the drone is especially critical during that time. This also sets a good attitude for the drone’s ultimate missions while increasing drone longevity. This work provides details about the commercial drone pilot’s license and possible approaches for ensuring personnel safety, such as the usage of a controlled environment.
