Abstract
In the practice and study of cancer care, there exists a demographic that has historically been underrepresented and understudied. This group, referred to as adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients consists of patients aged 15–39. From treatments, to supports, and even facilities, cancer care is largely structured either toward the pediatric or middle aged/geriatric populations. Unfortunately, this means AYAs are the only cancer population that has not seen an improvement in mortality rates in recent years. The physical and psychosocial implications of a cancer diagnosis at this life stage poses a set of challenges different to those of their pediatric and geriatric counterparts. A field of study pioneered very recently called social genomics seeks to understand the genetic and biological impact of these psychosocial and environmental factors, allowing cancer care teams to best cater treatments and support to the unique needs of this population. Research data will be accrued by collecting 5 blood samples from a projected 2000 participants across two years and collecting corresponding survey data detailing patient-reported quality of life. While we are not yet actively collecting data, we expect that data will correspond to prior findings in the field of social genomics. It is likely that patients experiencing greater psychosocial stressors will exhibit greater genetic disposition to a cancer recurrence or poorer general health and quality of life. Study findings will aid in the curation of treatment and support options that serve the needs of survivors at all stages of life and health.
