Abstract
The SPARX Project aims to gather a spectrum of knowledge and activity parents and educators take/have and how they approach teaching children about racism and xenophobia. Oftentimes, parents and educators have little guidance on how to approach the developing minds of adolescent children. The ultimate goal of this research project is to develop a website with information from coded interviews, including how the adults educate themselves and how they communicate with their children/students regarding encounters with racism and xenophobia. After 88 interviews were performed on educators and parents from all backgrounds and locations, the lab proceeded to “code†interviews using methods called “RADaRing†(Rapid and Rigorous Qualitative Data Analysis). Through reading the interviews and dissecting them, nuances of what each interviewee says are much more important than the explicit information they say when answering the question. “RADaRing†and coding the interviews is an intermediary step that will lead to a proper and sufficient website that helps adults be more intentional with interactions with children to facilitate positive development. As results are still being developed, further data analysis of the interviews is now being performed by a process called Structural Coding. The goal of this website is to create opportunities for anyone who wishes to educate themselves in racism and xenophobia as well as create confidence in children’s racial-ethnic identity.
