Abstract

Building upon previous years of data and analysis, the purpose of this research is to continue to generate knowledge on the current and future Chinese automotive industry and market. This means gathering data on foreign and domestic car manufacturers in regards to, for example, how many cars they are producing, how many they are selling, what kind of cars they are making. This kind of research is particularly important for different auto manufacturers, suppliers, and people that analyze the largest market in the world. The data in this project was obtained through various sources. In regards to finding information on how foreign manufacturers such as Ford, BMW, and Tesla are managing risk within the Chinese market, information was gathered from reliable news sources and academic articles. In terms of data for production, sales, and customer satisfaction ratings, Ward’s Automotive Yearbook as well as JDPower China was used. Through all of the collected data, it was learned that it is crucial for manufacturers to have an exit strategy in China as well as make use of dual sourcing strategies. Additionally, it was observed that while Chinese manufacturers are starting to catch up in regards to making quality and desirable vehicles, foreign auto producers are still leading in most segments. With all of this analysis, it has become easier to identify shifts and trends within the Chinese market and this can be particularly helpful to manufacturers as they will be able to see what the Chinese people need and want from their cars and then be able to adapt to this.
