Abstract

This research study surveyed how manufacturers are implementing controls and displays in vehicles. The purpose of this is to see how Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101 may need to change as new technologies in vehicles are emerging. Three student researchers and two mentors reviewed vehicle manuals and used trial and error to develop a template in Excel to document the different controls and displays in vehicles. Another researcher visited vehicle manufacturers to take pictures of the controls and displays in the interior of the vehicles. The template was organized by the location of controls documented in the pictures, and includes details for each physical control, as well as popup warnings extracted from each vehicle manual. The project will survey at least two vehicles for the sixteen main vehicle manufacturers in the US, and include detailed documentation of each manufacturer’s infotainment system. The project will allow comparison of how manufacturers are implementing controls and displays and may identify how FMVSS 101 could be updated to address new technologies being introduced into vehicles. This poster focuses on comparing differences among manufacturers in how they implement blind spot warning features.
