Abstract
Our research project is Surveying Vehicle Controls and Displays. The study analyzed and documented controls and displays in vehicles to understand how different manufacturers are implementing controls and displays for new technologies. Results may be used to update FMVSS No. 101. The first part of the project involved developing methods to describe controls and displays of 40 different vehicles in MS Excel. We went through three trials to get the correct format. Challenges were consistency across team members, time it takes to document each vehicle, and prioritizing the interests of the sponsor (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Throughout the research, we have been looking at vehicle manuals to help understand the controls and displays within the vehicles. The manuals also helped us identify which vehicles to survey to maximize variations within manufacturers. This led us to shift our vehicle selection strategy to begin with two vehicles per manufacturer, and to focus more on what makes the vehicles different, such as infotainment systems. Once data collection is finished, analysis will compare how different manufacturers are implementing various types of controls and displays related to new technologies that could inform future federal safety standards. For this poster, we focus on identifying how manufacturers are implementing controls and displays for frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems.
