Abstract
In the state of Michigan, schools and education systems have an apparent lack of connection between public media and education spaces and a gap between schools and their communities. When schools have access to create quality media content, they rarely have opportunities to showcase their work and share it with their communities. Detroit Public TV’s Michigan Learning Channel, a non-profit organization serving prek-12th grade classroom teachers, families, and community educators across Michigan, works to bridge these gaps and curate media-driven opportunities for these demographics. To better understand the types of programs offered in schools and how teachers are providing resources to students, we researched community demographics, collected data about many media programs across the state, and interviewed educators. This information was later used to create a database of all the teachers and programs involved in media-driven creation in Michigan. Information from this database will be used to connect teachers with each other and provide further resources for students to be able to succeed. Moving forward, we hope to continue collecting data about the various programs schools offer either through their Career and Technical Education programs or within their very own curriculum. Working with these communities and meeting them where they are at is vital in the next steps where we hope to give back to these teachers and students by uplifting their voices and sharing their work.
