Abstract
In this community-engaged research project, the focus was on developing STEM lessons tailored for an after-school program catering to at-risk youths. The project aimed to address the gap in resources for students lacking access to comprehensive educational and recreational opportunities. Through the integration of softball and baseball into STEM projects, the initiative sought to strike a balance between physical activity and academic enrichment. Being able to pilot three lessons provided me with valuable insights into the dynamics of engaging young learners and adapting lesson plans to meet their needs. Flexibility emerged as a crucial aspect, as envisioned lessons often required adjustments in real-time to maintain engagement and ensure effective learning. Understanding the rapid shifts in children’s moods underscored the importance of dynamic and interactive teaching methods. By incorporating sports into STEM education, the project aimed to provide a multifaceted approach to skill development, encompassing physical fitness, mathematical proficiency, and STEM competencies. This interdisciplinary approach not only enhances cognitive abilities but also fosters a holistic understanding of real-world applications of academic concepts. The project’s significance lies in its potential to empower at-risk youths by offering opportunities for both physical and mental development. Moreover, by extending the program into the summer months, when parental supervision may be limited due to work commitments, it fills a crucial gap in available resources. By bridging the divide between academic enrichment and recreational activities, the initiative seeks to promote holistic development and empower youths from underserved communities.
