Abstract
The goal of this study is to explore different types of retractions in chemistry papers. Data analysis was performed on 1429 papers that were identified based on chemistry as a listed subject, a retraction date between 1/1/2001 and 12/31/2022, and were either research or review articles. Each of these papers had reason(s) for retraction and using this information, the papers were assigned a certain action, investigation, and notice. This information guided the research; as of right now, some observations have been made. First, the most common action is “withdrawal”, most common notice is “limited or no information,” and most common investigation is “investigation by journal or publisher.” Second, during the mid 2000s, the number of papers retracted due to the most common action and notice spiked up. This trend, however, is not reflected by the paper investigations. Third, papers published in 2007, had the number of actions, notices, and investigations reach a peak of around 110; this is extremely high compared to other publication years, which were all below 20 actions, notices, and investigations. We will also discuss our observations about the distribution of retraction time (retraction year – publication year).
