Abstract
Around 30-35 Ma marks the transition from the greenhouse world of the Eocene to the icebox world of the Oligocene. Antarctic ice sheet grew during this period likely influencing the oxygenation of the Southern Ocean. To measure possible drivers that change dissolved oxygen concentrations in the Southern Ocean during this time, we are investigating sediments from IODP site U1553 south of New Zealand (52°13.44’S:166°11.49’E) from 26-36 Ma. This sediment core is 581.16 m long and 1221 m deep with sediment data from the early Paleogene through the Oligocene. We measured total organic carbon (TOC) in the sediments by isolating it from total carbon (TC) through an acidification process and measuring TOC and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) in an elemental analyzer. Using this data, we can try to construct how the current warming environment might affect the decrease in oxygen levels in the oceans.
