Abstract
This research portfolio explores the ways dramaturgy has been, and continues to be, a driving force in leveraging the performing arts for social justice activism. Divided into three parts, this comprehensive study presents: 1) a historical overview of American dramaturgy contributing toward social change and community engagement; 2) analysis of current dramaturgical methodologies used in new work development for the purpose of amplifying the message and impact of the stories being told; and, 3) a devised theatre process that centers dramaturgical inquiry and curates new work and underserved voices. Various modes of research will be utilized/are used in this project, such as literary research, ethnographic research, field research interviews, special topic research, and devised theatre practice. Two case studies, present work and work in-development, will be researched/analyzed to assess the impact of dramaturgical support in productions. Conclusions will be based on what informs effective dramaturgy praxis in new work development by focusing on existing literature, current processes and proposed models.
