Abstract
Background: Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) play a pivotal role in worksite health and safety. Focused on three prevention levels—primary, secondary, and tertiary—they actively engage in activities like implementing control strategies, conducting screening programs, and fostering community collaborations. OHNs have multifaceted responsibilities, ranging from addressing workplace risks to promoting health partnerships with the community [e.g., partnering with agencies, organizing health fairs, and contributing to disaster preparedness]. While existing literature details their job roles, there remains a gap in understanding OHNs’ personal experiences. Purpose: To address this gap, our research aims to contribute a more comprehensive understanding of the occupational health nursing profession. Methods: The study employs a quantitative and qualitative phenomenological approach, with inclusion criteria encompassing individuals aged 18 and older, currently working as Occupational Health Nurses, residing in the United States, able to provide verbal consent, and proficient in English. Participants will be engaged in individual Zoom interviews, and demographic data will be recorded through the use of a Qualtrics Survey taken prior to the interview. Results: While the study has not yet been conducted, it is expected that the research will reveal diverse educational backgrounds and varied professional experiences within the field of occupational health nursing. Insights into the autonomy, roles in health and safety at worksites, and the multifaceted nature of occupational nursing are expected to emerge. Conclusion: The findings will enhance our understanding of the experiences of OHNs, emphasize their importance in worker health and safety, and identify areas for improvement in professional practice and education.
