Abstract

Sports related concussion (SRCs) are experienced by athletes throughout collegiate level sports. The prevalence of SRCs motivates continued epidemiology research to direct primary prevention efforts (??Wiebe, D. J., D’Alonzo, B. A., Harris, R., Putukian, M., & Campbell-McGovern, C. (2018)). This project focuses on understanding the causes of mechanisms of injury (MOIs) within the context of unique sports that may identify opportunities for prevention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate MOI across contact and collision sports within the Ivy League-Big Ten Epidemiology of Concussion Study.The Ivy League-BigTen Epidemiology of Concussion Study, is a prospective cohort study monitoring student-athletes after sustaining a concussion throughout their recovery. During this study, a descriptive narrative regarding the circumstance of how the injury occurs is recorded. We used STATA, a statistical software platform, to code MOIs and use cluster analysis with circle packing diagrams to analyze MOI data. Our cluster analyses enable us to determine common co-occuring circumstances of the injury to visualize patterns of SRC causes within each sport. For example in men’s lacrosse we found the most common concussion MOI in competition was being checked; whereas, in women’s lacrosse we observed the most common concussion mechanism in competition was having contact with another person. We then develop unique sport concussion reports shared with coaches and other stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and direct primary SRC prevention. .
