Abstract
With the goal of reducing the number of concussions in each sport, the University of Michigan’s Michigan Medicine’s Injury Prevention Center is identifying mechanisms of injury (MOI) in sports related concussions (SRC). This project is enriched by the findings from the articles, Sex Differences in the Clinical Incidence of Concussions, Missed School Days, and Time Loss in High School Student-Athletes by Bretzin et al., which state that despite the variety of reasons for concussions, sex plays a big role in who and how these concussions are sustained. Additionally, after the concussion there is a difference between recovery days as well as days out of school before athletes return between the two sexes. While there are numerous different reasons for the differences in these numbers, this project heavily focuses on the MOIs. MOIs include where the concussion occurred, practice or competition, and how they were sustained. In the Ivy Big-Ten Study student athletes are targeted and their concussion injuries are evaluated. They were given a survey where they reported their MOIs, the position they were playing and where it occurred, either in practice, scrimmage, or competition. This data was then put through STATA, a statistical software platform that enables us to code MOIs, sort them into graphs and charts as well as create circle packing diagrams. With the description of MOIs reported by athletes and coaches, they are sorted into smaller categories, then with the new categories circle packings. Circle packings enable us to see a visual tree diagram of how variables co-occur with each other. These are all later put into a poster that is sent back to the coaches and stakeholders to determine any possible rule changes to limit concussion occurrences.
