Abstract

The power of gamification and escape rooms as cooperative learning environments has recently become a subject of study. Many studies point to these games as powerful tools in fostering learning and cooperation while being positively received by most participants. This project examines videos and transcripts of a group going through an escape room called The Artist’s Conundrum. We identify moments of cooperative action through different substrates (e.g., speech, physical motion, human tools, etc.) that demonstrate knowledge, or lack thereof, and the learning that follows it as the group solves the room. This paper aims to critically analyze the social interactions between players, each other, and their environment. Through a series of analytic snapshots from gameplay, we showcase the varying substrates participants used to exhibit knowledge and the trajectory of “learning” to escape.
