Abstract

Despite already existing as a main contributor to the power system today, there are so many more layers to the hydropower energy source to be unveiled. The potential growth requires attention and can be made possible with innovative solutions and sustainable practices emerging from interdisciplinary collaboration. The Hydropower Collegiate Competition offers a platform for a new generation of students to foster collaboration, interest, and engagement towards this goal. Powering non-powered dams brings far less environmental harm than the construction of new dams, hence through various case studies, siting reports, design reports, and community engagement actions, the Hydropower Wolverines aim to propose a plan to power the Geddes Dam located in Ann Arbor. Composed of members from various study levels and across various disciplines including Engineering, Economics, and Environmental Science, this team hopes to bring innovative solutions to existing challenges in the industry. In addition, having to conduct various interviews with industry experts raised awareness of specific aspects of the design within the team. Finally, aside from the technical aspects of this competition, actions were taken to promote engagement and a sense of interconnectedness amongst students, local communities, and the industry. This project and the actions taken within will further the shared goal of a clean energy future.
