Abstract
We lack knowledge on the impact of Non-Standard Work Arrangements (NSWA) on the health of workers. NSWA includes being hired through temporary help agencies, on-call, contract, or freelance positions. This method of hire is becoming more common due to the changing nature of work and worker characteristics. We conducted an overview of the literature. We searched PubMed, CINHAL, PsychInfo, and Google Scholar. We included papers that were published in English. We did not have an exclusion year because of the little we know about the topic. We created a synthesis table to capture study design, study region, worker type, industry, and health outcomes. Preliminary data indicate that workers hired through NSWA have the highest risks for workplace exposures and injuries. They were also more likely to report poor mental health and chronic conditions. Women and individuals in minority racial/ethnic categories who are hired through NSWA were more likely to experience poor health outcomes compared to their counterparts hired directly by the organizations. Certain industries and job tasks also increase risks for poor health among NSWs. Future studies are needed for compelling evidence to advocate for improved practices, and policies to promote NSWAs’ health.
