Abstract

The improving developments of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Arts industry have elucidated profound changes and novel opportunities that arise at the intersection of technology and creativity. AI transforms the way art is created and challenges traditional notions, such as aesthetics and technique, of what constitutes art. With the rapid advancement of technology, AI has gained the ability to generate art (GenAI), blurring the line between man-made and machine-made creations. These recent developments in the Arts world have led to many changes and protests, such as the Hollywood Writer’s Guild strike in 2023 where concerns about copyright and contracts were raised. This case altered contracts in Hollywood, which now prevents studios from treating AI-generated content as “source material”, like a novel or a stage play, to avoid replacing writers and original scripts. Such events shape the way in which stakeholders in the Arts industry view the developments of AI. This has generated two main debates in the Art industry: 1) some support the use of AI and technology to change the art-making process for the better; 2) others argue that AI may threaten to replace artists and raise copyright concerns. This study synthesizes existing literature, case studies, and expert insights to comprehensively analyze the multifaceted role of AI in shaping the landscape of artistic creation, consumption, and distribution. The study will also review primary research such as surveys on various stakeholders affected by AI developments in the Art industry to quantify the various perspectives. These results will add nuance to the understanding that stakeholders in the Art industry possess on AI’s impact.
