Abstract
Potable reuse is an increasingly important approach to addressing water scarcity globally. Because it involves treating wastewater to drinking water quality, pathogen control is critical. However, in the United States there are no federal regulations for pathogen removal during potable reuse, including for viruses. Virus removal credit is awarded to individual potable reuse treatment processes based on individual state regulations. One set of these processes, coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation (CFS), is not currently awarded any pathogen removal credit because it is primarily used to remove particulate matter and reduce turbidity. Despite this, limited research is now showing CFS potentially removes viruses. The purpose of this project is to ascertain the current state of literature regarding virus removal during coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation in order to determine how much treatment credit they should receive.
