Abstract
When considering intersectionality in higher education, there are many complexities to acknowledge. American institutions have only become more diverse in the last few centuries, so there is still a lot to learn about how different groups of people act, think, and feel in various settings. This study looks at the effects of different historical events on Latinx students, while considering the additional factors of age, nationality, and time period. Through a survey of 102 undergraduates and 115 graduate students, this lab tracked how certain social and political events of recent years resulted in different levels of meaningfulness and positive or negative feelings. Several of the events the Latinx students were given to classify were controversial among opposing groups, and people of varying ethnicities often disagreed about them. The 2008 and 2016 elections, the Affordable Care Act, and the Black Lives Matter movement are a few examples of the topics students had to consider. Many commonalities were found in the data; certain moments in history were more likely to be marked as high meaningfulness and negative impact, or any combination of significance and outcomes. These results are useful for both advocating for the perspective of Latinx students and for possible comparison with future data, maybe with a sample that is ethnically different, or handling different events. This lab is also considering extrapolating this dataset to see if the role that age plays is consistent with other previous research that was done without the consideration of ethnicity.
