Abstract
As people get older, their dependency increases with their age. Programs to help the senior population are necessary as they get to the point when they are no longer able to care for themselves. Multiple options are available for those of varying degrees of dependency, ranging from nursing homes to food services to in-home care. AgeWays is a nonprofit organization serving Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, and Washtenaw counties, that helps people access the services and programs they need to remain living independently and with dignity in their own home or with family caregivers. This is achieved by working with a network of various program providers and working with the legislature to ensure that people over the age of 60 can age and receive care in the way they choose. By analyzing data from the Census and the American Community Survey, it’s possible to compile data that tells a story and helps others understand the needs of seniors in southeastern Michigan. Specifically looking at data of those 60 and older, with a focus on minority status and poverty level, and caregivers, AgeWays works to fulfill their mission. To raise awareness and present the data in a way that makes logical sense and serves a purpose, visual aids were made through ArcGIS. Using ArcGIS, the data was aggregated into various maps that will represent the older adult population, available resources for them, and what they still may be lacking. Using these graphics, awareness can be raised with the public, other organizations can showcase the need and potentially receive more funding, and areas can be prioritized to best serve the demands of the senior population in southeastern Michigan.
