Abstract

Water that flows through road culverts can cause erosion, leading to long-term damage to the roads and streambeds. The US Federal Highway Administration has implemented guidelines in order to prevent this damage on federal roads, and individual states have developed similar guidelines as well. Additionally, flood events and storm surges can also cause damage to culverts and roads, and, in extreme cases, can even cause washouts. The purpose of this study is to develop appropriate guidelines for the Ohio Department of Transportation, and to study the effects of flooding in the Lake Michigan region. Various lengths of stone bedding made up of different types of rock were used in experiments in order to determine the ideal type of bedding that would prevent erosion. A sensor was used to record the depth of the scour and the flow rate of water into the flume, and this data was then used to calculate the inlet flow rate of the pipe as well as the threshold velocity in which scour occurs. In order to measure flood risk, models were created of Milwaukee and Benton Harbor using Delft3D, and simulations were conducted based on previous flood events in those regions. Data regarding the flood events and initial flood conditions was retrieved from gauges monitoring rivers and streams in the region, as well as from news reporting on the flood events. After running the simulations, the results were mapped and graphed using MATLAB and compared to the real effects of the floods.
