Abstract

Metabolic diseases and challenges are widespread, with rising obesity rates underscoring the urgent need for safe and effective weight loss methods soon. The past two decades have introduced an explosive growth in our understanding of bile acids as signaling molecules in metabolism. Our research delves into the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of bariatric surgery, focusing on strategies for metabolic disease treatment. We have previously reported that Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) results in rapid and sustained weight loss, accompanied by an increase in circulating bile acids. This study will analyze the role of bile acid metabolism under Sham and VSG using targeted metabolomics. Plasma will be collected and compared between WT Sham and VSG groups in plasma and tissues via flux ratios. We hypothesize that VSG will alter bile acid composition and levels by altering the bile acid liver uptake. As obesity rates rise, contributing to the development of safe procedures that could address the societal need for viable weight loss solutions, potentially benefiting those with metabolic challenges.
