Abstract

While the influence of artificial intelligence continues to be on the rise in operating within various sectors, generative AI is becoming a transformative tool that impacts creativity and design. This study delves into the ethical implications and controversies that emerge from generative AI, specifically within the art and design context. This research utilizes and studies Adobe Sensei, a feature developed into Adobe Creative Suite as a way to research generative AI. The investigation closely follows the research question of: “How accurately can individuals distinguish between images generated by AI and those created authentically, and what ethical implications arise from potential challenges in differentiating the two?”. For this study, I created a thorough investigation that included ten images that were altered using generative AI methods through Adobe Sensei such as object removal, addition, replication, etc. These pictures were added to a Google Form where participants were asked to distinguish which ones involved generative AI. Additionally, participants were asked to provide insights on the ethical considerations surrounding the use of generative AI in the creative domain. Quantitative analysis was used to examine the results, and participants’ ability to distinguish between original and generatively altered images was demonstrated through a visual depiction of accuracy. In order to acquire a greater understanding of the perceived ethical implications of generative AI in the creative domain, qualitative responses were methodically explored. The results will aim to demonstrate the accuracy behind individuals’ ability to differentiate between generative and traditional works—ultimately unveiling the potential challenges with the utilization of generative in the creative space.
