Abstract

This study evaluates the feasibility of converting non-powered dams near Ann Arbor specifically, the Geddes Dam and Argo Dam, into hydropower facilities. Utilizing data from the Non-Powered Dam Explorer and additional calculations based on hydraulic head, flow exceedance, and potential nominal capacity, Geddes Dam was identified as the most suitable candidate for hydropower conversion. Economic feasibility, environmental considerations, community impact, and historical context were central to the analysis. By employing a cost model equation and considering various community and environmental impacts, the realizable potential of these projects was determined. Findings suggest that Geddes Dam, with its higher theoretical and technical potential and favorable community and environmental scores, presents a significant opportunity for sustainable energy development in Ann Arbor. This project is significant because if successful and viable, the transformation of a non-powered dam in Ann Arbor into a renewable energy source could substantially reduce the community’s dependence on fossil fuels.
