Abstract

The accurate identification of bird behavior is a fundamental part of ornithology and is important for ecology and environmental science. However, most, if not all, of the behavioral comparisons between avian species come as a result of painstaking and time-consuming field work that has traditionally relied on observations that are difficult to quantify. Additionally, while the arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) has motivated multiple studies about its potential uses in behavioral science, few of these modern researches have focused on bird behavior, not to mention the comparison of the behaviors of different bird species. To address the issue, our study works with LabGym, a cutting-edge AI-based computational tool that can identify and quantify animal behavior. Taking advantage of the software’s capabilities, we aim to arrive at a quantified analysis of the behavioral differences of three bird species (Corvus corax, Corvus macrorhynchos, and Corvus corone) through an iterative training process. The present research will test if AI can be used to perform quantifiable behavioral comparisons between bird species.
