Abstract

With the exponential growth of data collection in the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research labs, increasing demand of BCI to the scientific and general community, there is a need to conduct advanced BCI research, as noted in a recent study by Maiseli et al. (2023), Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research is experiencing. While the University of Michigan Direct Brain Interface (UMDBI) Matlab library offers powerful tools, its data analysis is limited to researchers with Matlab understanding. Recognizing that not all researchers understand Matlab, my work aims to recreate the data handling functions in Matlab to a R version library. By translating the Matlab code directly into R, this work provides an alternative analysis platform accessible to a wider range of researchers. This study focuses on examining the UMDBI Matlab library, identifying its core functionalities, and translating these functions into R, ensuring that the translated R code correctly reproduces the outputs of the original Matlab functions, thus providing another coding language available for BCI research. This research is in the process of creating more data analysis in translating the UMDBI Matlab library to R, making Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research tools more accessible to those unfamiliar with Matlab. This opens up BCI studies to more researchers to have the ability to analyze data and provide a further development of innovation in the field.
