Abstract
Many Asian American communities in Michigan face health disparities due to various social determinants, which hinder their access to essential healthcare services. Our goal at the Center of Health Disparities Innovations and Studies is to address these health inequities specific to each Asian American group. In this study we specifically focused on the Bangladeshi women residing in Hamtramck, Michigan, and increased awareness of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP). Our methodology involved analyzing the concerns of the women in the community, which helped us to be able to provide them with interventions to reduce the existing disparities. The language barrier emerged as a significant challenge in the implementation of successful interventions. Therefore, we divided our approach into promotion and education. First, we developed bilingual flyers and social media posts in both English and Bangla, incorporating a cultural sensitive factor. Next, we held an informational session conducted in both languages to educate the community on the BC3NP program and cancer screenings. At the end we had a feedback form to gauge how helpful our culturally centered interventions were. The positive feedback of the women in the Bangladeshi communities encourages us to continue our initiative to the reduction of health disparities and the promotion of healthcare within these minority Asian American populations.
