Abstract

Urban stormwater systems around the world are struggling due to climate change and increasing urbanization. The first step towards solving this problem is to improve monitoring of these systems by installing hydrologic sensors. The Digital Water Lab at the University of Michigan has deployed a large network of sensors throughout Michigan which measures parameters such as water depth in rivers and lakes. These sensors regularly malfunction or break down for various reasons, however. Maintenance takes a lot of time and effort, which motivates the need for more robust systems to monitor the network’s operational status. We have developed several new automated monitoring tools along with a dashboard displaying key metrics about the sensor network, including the percentage of deployed sensors that are active and how many users are viewing the data. This makes it easier to quickly find which sensors need maintenance, saving time and improving the quality of data produced by the network.
