Abstract
Shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative approach in which patients work with their clinician to assess available care options, and evaluate the pros and cons of each. By the definition of shared decision-making, it requires the participation of both patients and healthcare providers and they discuss their interest and decide final solutions together. The implementation may encourage transparent interaction that bridges the gap between patients and physicians and improves the effectiveness of clinical solutions. It also helps to solidify the relationship between patients and health providers since it considers more variables like sudden events and key shifting in life for both parties than the traditional physician-dominant mode. In this study, our research team conducts clinical simulation experiments and made surveys for both patients and health providers about quality of care. Each consists of a 30 minute session for one specific patient and health provider to simulate the contraceptive counseling process. Combined with statistical inference and qualitative analysis of the text, we examine the ratings and comments to compare the gap of interest to generalize the reasons for SDM processes and areas of improvement. The research hopes to improve the medical training of SDM which potentially have positive benefits for patient safety and care.
