Abstract
With the rapid development of hydroelectricity, Nepal is transitioning away from biomass and imported fossil fuel towards electricity. This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge on energy access and provides insights into Nepal’s energy transition. We conducted an extensive review of relevant literature and secondary data to highlight both existing knowledge and gaps in literature. Our study found that Nepal should diversify its electricity mix in order to mitigate the risks posed by climate change and natural disasters. Additionally, in order to increase electricity demand, Nepal must first improve the reliability of its electricity supply. Finally, Nepal’s electricity export strategy must change so that Nepal is primarily exporting surplus electricity and reducing fossil fuel imports. The implications of these findings provide recommendations for Nepal as it continues its energy transition. These recommendations can be applied not only to Nepal, but analogously to other countries undergoing an energy transition.
