Systematic cancer vaccine collection, annotation, and analysis through CanVaxKB Cancer vaccine knowledgebase

Abstract

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that is continuing to be explored, and therefore there are many studies investigating cancer vaccines. This work seeks to analyze and organize all of the data from these cancer vaccine clinical trials. CanVaxKB, the knowledge base being used, currently stores over 790 cancer vaccines, and is now using the Vaccine Ontology to be able to organize vaccines more efficiently in the future. For this UROP work 326 AI mapped candidate cancer vaccines were analyzed. This mapping was done by connecting a vaccine from a clinical trial (CT) from clinicaltrials.org to the CanVaxKB knowledge base (violent.org) and the Vaccine Ontology (ontobee.org). Of the vaccines, 37 were found to be mapped correctly. The ones not mapped correctly were then manually analyzed in a separate google sheets document. 115 CT vaccines were found to have corresponding vaccines in NCIT (ncit.org) the Vaccine Ontology, CanVaxKB, and an additional 81 vaccines had a corresponding vaccine in NCIT. The CT vaccines without a corresponding vaccine in CanVaxKB and the Vaccine Ontology are then analyzed and manually added to the knowledge base. Furthermore, melanoma cancer vaccines were further analyzed. As more cancer vaccine studies are published CanVaxKB and the Vaccine Ontology will continue to be updated. The mapping of these vaccines and the addition of new vaccines to the knowledge base is significant for the standardization and analysis of cancer vaccines.
