Abstract
One of the most important parts of attending college is learning how to critically analyze information. We use a series of performance assessment tasks to measure the degree to which students’ critical thinking skills develop in college. Undergraduates were given a series of documents to use in analyzing and defending an argument, some of which were more relevant and trustworthy than others. A potential proxy for a full grading of the essay is looking instead at which documents students claim were most important and helpful in their deliberative process. We found mixed results: sometimes students with higher critical thinking scores chose documents that were more accurate and relevant.
