Abstract
While census data may report raw statistical numbers on subjects such as poverty and inequality in areas, the experiences, emotions, and stories to report behind these found differences cannot be reported through a census. This is where youth participatory action comes into play, offering the view of these differences through the real-life experiences of youth. Today’s youth have knowledge and expertise about conditions of their everyday lives that census data is incapable of reporting (Fox, Madeline, et al). Census data is based on a narrow retelling of numerical information in neighborhoods, deeply lacking the personal stories and experiences that exist behind these socioeconomic disparities (Tarozzi and Deaton). In an attempt to mend this gap in census data, using youth who carry important knowledge and story-telling capabilities about the social conditions of their communities is critical. It is crucial to acknowledge youth and young adults’ ability to participate in serious discussions about their communities and lives. This youth participation should be connected and utilized for organizing research and taking action.
