Abstract

The Motor & Visual Development Laboratory focuses on understanding the movement patterns of neurodivergent individuals, with a particular focus on conditions such as autism, ADHD, and DCD/dyspraxia. The goal of this work is to uncover the relationship between motor and visual abilities in neurodivergent populations and leverage these findings in order to enhance accessibility and inclusion. We use motion capture systems to record and analyze the movement patterns of neurodivergent individuals compared to neurotypical counterparts. Our team uses Cortex 7 and Visual3D software to post-process and the collected data to provide nuanced insights into the interplay between motor skills, visual integration, and functional abilities in various neurodevelopmental conditions. Statistical tests are then used to identify predictors of atypical movement, with the ultimate aim of translating these findings into tailored recommendations for improved assessment and intervention. This research has implications for understanding how motor development in neurodivergent individuals influences their functional abilities across the lifespan. The societal benefit of this work also includes generation of new knowledge that can be used to foster environments where the unique motor development of neurodivergent individuals is comprehensively understood and accommodated.
