Abstract

This research project seeks to gain information about Whole Health and its impact on the community and individual wellness, focusing on students, veterans, and healthcare professionals. Whole Health is a practice used and created by the VA Healthcare System based on the Passport to Whole Health and the Circle of Whole Health that focuses on holistic patient care. The question our research is trying to answer is individual and community perspectives and ideologies relating to Whole Health and how this can be used to better community wellness. The project seeks to expand what we know about holistic wellness and its outreach. Our research process started with researching sectors of Whole Health that we were interested in and deriving questions from this research. From here we used the questions we created to finalize the survey and distribute it to the public, including all demographics. We used R Statistical Software to perform chi-squared tests while analyzing the data from the survey. We hoped to learn more about the Whole Health practices people engage in as well as their perceptions regarding holistic health and how it can be used as a wellness tool. More specifically, we wanted to investigate the relationship between burnout and factors such as exercise frequency and the amount of sunlight an individual gets daily. The chi-squared test suggested an association between burnout and exercise as well as burnout and the amount of sunlight a person experiences. However, the resulting population that engaged in the survey was skewed towards the student population compared to veterans and healthcare workers so we cannot suggest this association is present in these populations. Given these results, I plan to start an implementation project with two of my research peers in the form of a student organization focused on reducing burnout.
