Abstract
Abstract Title: A narrative review of pain treatments for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) Background: Chronic pain affects an individual’s life substantially and especially those with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disease that is associated with high rates of disability. Current pain treatments often offered to those with SLE are associated with adverse effects and target nociceptive pain, leaving other mechanisms of pain in SLE (i.e., nociplastic pain) unaddressed. Recently, research has begun to focus on a variety of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical approaches for managing SLE chronic pain, however there is little consensus regarding how these therapies should be integrated into clinical care. Objective: We aim to conduct a narrative review of chronic pain treatments in SLE. Methods: As a first step, we are reviewing background literature regarding the pathophysiology of pain in SLE and other autoimmune diseases. Next, we will use a search strategy in PubMed that includes terms for SLE and pain to identify key papers focused on treatments for SLE chronic pain. We will also review papers cited within the key references to identify additional articles. Once we have gathered all the relevant literature, we will synthesize and critique the articles to provide a summary of existing evidence and recommendations for next steps regarding SLE chronic pain care. Conclusion: Findings may inform clinical guidelines and future research that focuses on the need for safer and more effective treatments for SLE chronic pain.
