Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Immediate and accurate TBI classification remains elusive due the broad combinations of injury location, severity, and cause. While other promising diagnostic tools have become known to diagnose and predict prognosis of TBI, such as blood biomarkers, the complexity of TBIs may require other diagnostic tools to be used in conjunction. In this study, we created a swine model of traumatic brain injury to test if breath based biomarkers, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), could be used as an accurate diagnostic tool for TBI. This swine model allows us to better understand the pathophysiology in humans by replicating the pathophysiological response to TBI and helps us determine how breath based biomarkers change over-time. The goal of this study is to observe how volatile organic compounds change in response to traumatic brain injury, and to assess whether these breath based biomarkers could be used as a fast and reliable tool for the diagnosis and prognosis of TBI.
