Abstract
Recently, a movement to develop sustainable technology that helps improve the lives of farmers and improve food security has emerged. Though well-intentioned, this technology often fails to adequately address the needs of farmers and communities. We worked with urban farmers connected to the food sovereignty movement in Detroit to understand these stakeholders’ perceptions of how technology may both harm and help farmers and their communities. We establish a list of guiding principles for technology developers to center technology around community goals, farmer needs, and food sovereignty.
