Abstract
The development of the motor and visual systems may differ in the neurodivergent population in comparison with the neurotypical population. With this, it is essential to understand the mechanisms involved in visuomotor integration and the effect they have on functional ability in order to discover what supports and interventions may help with accommodation and inclusion. It is also important to understand where the motor features of different neurodevelopmental conditions overlap and diverge. For example, some prior research has identified similar motor problems among autistic people and people with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). DCD is characterized by a lower ability to perform motor skills, early onset motor difficulties, and difficulties not being better explained by something else. In this lifespan longitudinal study, participants ages two through late adulthood were administered the Movement Assessment Battery for Children – 3rd edition (MABC-3) standardized assessment in which they were instructed to complete various manual dexterity, aiming & catching, and balance tasks. In addition, participants complete two questionnaires (MABC-3 Checklist and the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire) about their personal motor experience. They were then scored on accuracy and time to complete the tasks, as well as any notable differences in posture or movement. The goal of the present study is to determine what proportion of neurodivergent participants meet the clinical criteria for DCD. We are looking for convergence and divergence within populations with neurodivergence and those who fit the criteria for DCD. The overarching issue being addressed is whether there is co-occurrence of DCD and neurodivergence, or whether motor components should be added to the diagnostic criteria for autism or ADHD.
