Abstract
This project aims to develop an ecological companion to Naajimiijimedaa by Kathy Kae that combines cultural and ecological insights about various plants, mushrooms, and animals significant to Indigenous communities. Naajimiijimedaa has already explored these same plants, animals, and mushrooms as an introduction to foraging and has provided many recipes. This companion piece will work in tandem with the book and help give foragers in Michigan even more information regarding the plants, animals, and mushrooms and their communities. Additionally, the inclusion of distribution maps at the county level will provide an overview of species ranges and general locations. For agricultural species like corn, squash, and beans, the companion will highlight their cultural significance, historical uses, methods of harvest, and connections to traditional land management techniques such as fire use. The project incorporates a literature review and research topics to ensure the inclusion of ecological and cultural anecdotes for each species. The final product will (most likely) be available both as a printed booklet and online, providing a resource that bridges traditional ecological knowledge with practical conservation considerations.
