Abstract

This study investigates the effects of exercise on people with dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder, DCD) by analyzing recent literature. Dyspraxia significantly impairs motor control, making it challenging for individuals to perform everyday tasks and engage in physical activities. Traditional therapies are commonly used to manage DCD, but there is growing interest in the potential of exercise to improve motor skills and overall well-being. The interest stems from unique, engaging approaches potentially yielding better results and often being more financially sustainable. I located sources using PubMed as well as the University of Michigan Library. The search revealed diverse exercise interventions, from Taekwondo to virtual reality exercise programs. In total, 7 interventions, 2 literature reviews, and 3 qualitative studies were found and utilized. The studies found that physical activity has positive effects on the well-being of those with dyspraxia and, in many studies, improvement of symptoms such as motor skills, strength, and social development. However, discrepancies exist in the magnitude and duration of these benefits, with most studies showing short-term improvements, a few showing long-term, and one indicating a need for further interventions due to inconclusive results. Despite these variations, overall the 7 interventions suggested that physical activity is beneficial for those with dyspraxia, highlighting the importance of adaptive, engaging exercise programs to enhance their physical and mental health. Throughout the review, there was a lack of research surrounding adults and long-term effects, showcasing a gap in those areas. Based on this review, the implementation of exercise-based interventions is beneficial to those with DCD, and at the University of Michigan, exercise programs and technologies can be implemented in a way to benefit those with DCD and others.
