Abstract
As our understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion expands, it is essential to consider neurodivergent individuals and the ways in which their brains function differently from neurotypical individuals. Recent studies have suggested a potential connection between the gastrointestinal (GI) system and the brain. This may help explain differences in brain functionality observed in individuals with altered gut microbiomes or dysregulated neurotransmitter activity. Although further research is needed, a deeper understanding of the gut-brain axis could lead to healthier, longer lives for neurodivergent individuals while preserving the unique cognitive strengths associated with neurodiversity. This research involved the development of targeted questions aimed at identifying correlations between neurodivergent individuals and GI system function. The survey questions were designed to include both scale-based responses and binary (yes/no) options to ensure depth in participant responses while maintaining ease of analysis. Consultation with GI system professionals during the question drafting process highlighted the complexity of the GI system and underscored the importance of precise questions to obtain meaningful data. The broader implications of these findings suggest parallels with neuropsychological methodologies, where individualized assessment and research are key to understanding the cognitive and behavioral characteristics of neurodivergent individuals as well as neurotypical. As research progresses and our understanding deepens, more effective treatment strategies and management approaches can be developed to address the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals while supporting their strengths.
