Abstract

In a comprehensive review of 65 conducted interviews, which focuses on nonprofit work, this research has examined what nonprofit leaders love most about their nonprofit work, love most about leadership, what their leadership philosophies are and how those philosophies have changed. Inspired by the former work of project leader Elizabeth Trinh’s work in understanding social dynamics in workspace performance, including two papers on emotion response strategies on work outcomes (ie: how others’ emotions affect work performance) (Lambert et al. 2022) and identifying the effects of interventions work in organizational contexts (ie: understanding which interventions work and how and why for organizations) (Bradley et al. 2024)., these interviews sought to examine how nonprofit work affected leaders lives, including relational breakdowns (due to argument, disagreements, conflict, or leader disapproval), leader doubt about self, resultant confidence in leadership decisions, and the trajectory impact nonprofit work had on leaders, including whether they burned out or lost motivation in their role. Finally, the interviews examined how broader factors, like a student’s organizational support or their network of support helped them. Analyzing transcripts of these interviews, and reflecting on the answers provided by leaders to lines of questioning related to these topics, this research sought to, en masse, determine if leaders found leading meaningful, whether they faced disapproval in their experience working with non-profit, whether their experience developed feelings of doubt or confidence, how self aware these leaders were, and weather they were destabilized or restabilized following their involvement with nonprofit work, with respective categorical values for each as follows ((yes/no/maybe, and why), (Yes/no/maybe,and why), (Yes/no/maybe, and why), (low/medium/high self awareness/self reflection), and (destabilized or restabilized and why)).
