Abstract
This study takes an in-depth look at the significance of home advantage, which is when a team hosts another at their home venue, in NCAA Division 1 Women’s Volleyball. The study aims to first examine if there appears to be any advantage for the team playing at home. Second, how significant said advantage is in addition to any confounding variables that could also influence the results. Third, we also examined how volleyball home advantage in the last 3 years compared to football home advantage in the last 3 years among the Big Ten Conference and the American Coastal Conference. The study gathered data by reviewing each team’s website and organizing the relevant information into a spreadsheet, and from there, correlation analyses were performed. After correlations are found, an R² value of less than 0.5 will prove sufficient evidence to look into possible confounding variables. The findings seek to clarify the comparison of women’s volleyball and football home advantage. Additionally, the above procedures could indicate that there is a significant home advantage, that crowd size could play a role in the advantage, and that volleyball could have a more significant home advantage within the conference, possibly due to the frequency of travel.
