Abstract
My research examines the extent of influence advocacy groups have in the drafting of public policies, specifically on how they exert significant influence on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory decisions. The FDA serves as the central regulatory body overseeing the safety and efficacy of food and drugs in the United States. My role in the project is to analyze public comments concerning policies on the health and safety standards for agricultural water in growing, harvesting, packing, and holding produce. I also analyzed standards for nutrition labeling of menu items. The interests of the lobbying groups range from large chain establishments and small family-owned businesses to healthcare advocates and members of Congress. I analyzed the changes between draft and final policy texts to investigate how groups affect the development of regulations and the potential implications for public health and accountability. The findings of this research could be useful for organizations looking to influence policies through their public comments.
