Abstract
Abstract Title: Muscle Strength and Apolipoprotein B Levels in U.S. Adults Introduction: Diabetes and coronary heart disease are two major cardiometabolic diseases that have been major causes of health complications and death in the United States. This study focuses on finding the association between muscle strength and apolipoprotein B levels, otherwise referred to as apoB. Muscle strength is measured through grip strength, collected via a handheld dynamometer. The main question we are trying to answer is how does muscle strength, as measured by grip strength, a noninvasive measurement approach, relate to apoB levels. Understanding the link between an easily collected measurement of strength and a marker of cardiometabolic health may lend support to using measures of strength as indicators of cardiometabolic health. Methods: Data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and the primary group of interest were adults 45 and older. NHANES utilizes a complex sampling design in order to generate estimates for the broader U.S. population. We will use a linear regression model to examine whether grip strength is a significant predictor of apoB levels. The data analysis will be completed in STATA. Conclusions: These future findings may suggest that muscle strength, as measured by grip strength, could help be an early identifier for individuals at risk for cardiometabolic diseases.
